Fountains have a long history of aesthetic appeal. In ancient times, it was believed that one could live a longer and healthier life if they could see or hear water as often as possible. This appeal, in modern times, has created a market containing a wide array of fountains, ranging from small ornamental pieces, to outdoor birdbaths, to stylized and artistic pieces. And now, they've gone solar.
The basic idea behind any solar fountain is the circulation of water. They employ pumps to draw water to the top, and allow it to flow back down naturally. This has a few purposes, both practical and aesthetic. Water that remains stagnant is more prone to collecting mildew and debris. When water moves, it stays cleaner and more aerated. The flow of water also creates appealing sights and sounds.
All fountains require some kind of power source for the pumping mechanism. The trouble with installing a fountain, then, is the complex task of wiring. This is completely eliminated when the fountain is powered by solar panels. All the energy a solar fountain needs to circulate its water can be collected directly from the Sun if it's in an area with sufficient light. If a shadier location is desired, there are fountains available with detachable solar panels that can be laid or buried discreetly in a sunnier location.
The simplest type of solar fountain is a small birdbath that can be mounted on a windowsill or the rail of a deck or porch. The sound of the water will draw the attention of birds as it circulates, simultaneously cleaning and aerating. Similar models are available in larger sizes. Traditional aesthetic, solar-powered fountains are available in a wide range of styles, sizes, and price ranges. There are even indoor models available that employ solar power. These can be placed near windows or doorways where they can receive sunlight, or detachable panels can be placed elsewhere.
As far as small-scale landscape and birdbath fountains are concerned, solar-powered fountains easily parallel their traditional counterparts in functionality. Their ease-of-use, then, places them over the top as a great choice for any homeowner.
